Workshop on Risk assessment of Bank Square Organized by CSPA
Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture had a Jury for the work done by the students as part of the Workshop on, “Risk assessment of Bank square, Sector 17, Chandigarh”. 90 students in 13 groups exhibited their sheets and the viva was conducted over two days on 4-5th Dec, 2014.
With over 100 sheets on display, approximately 30 banks, one eatery joint and some private offices were covered for the study. Each building block was analysed at various floor level for its vulnerability to hazards that included faulty wiring, encroached balconies, cracks, lack of fire fighting systems and many more. The areas surrounding the buildings were also thoroughly studied for the issues related to emergency evacuation, access of emergency vehicles i.e fire engine, ambulance and police vehicle, existing parking, vegetation etc. Over and above field investigation, the students also formulated proposals for structural and non structural mitigation measures.
Dr. K.K Sharma, Head of Department, BBA-B Com/ Chitkara Business School reviewed the work. Dr Sharma has been associated with the field of disaster management through his work at UN level. He listened to all the groups with utmost patience and the students benefitted immensely from his questions and feedback. He was impressed by the in-depth analysis and quality of work. Dr. Sharma, Prof. IJS Bakshi(Director, CSPA) and Prof Surjit Bais(Principal, CSPA) also stressed that the work should be presented to the people working in the banks. This would be useful information for them to make the place disaster safe.
The exhibition was also visited by Dr. S.C Sharma, Registrar , Lt Col Rakesh Sharma (Retd) Associate Director, University Affairs and Jyotsna Kaushal, Dy.Dean, School of Applied Sciences, Chitkara University.
