The National Service Scheme, Chitkara University, Punjab under the Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) celebrated World Environment Day on June 5th, 2021 by organising a tree plantation drive. The tree plantation drive was executed in the presence of Dr. Brig. P.S Siwach, Pro-vice-chancellor – Administration, Chitkara University, Punjab and other staff and faculty members.

The United Nations’ primary vehicle for fostering environmental awareness and action is World Environment Day, which takes place every year on June 5th. It has served as a venue for raising awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, human overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption, and wildlife crime since its inception in 1974. Each year, the program has provided a theme and forum for businesses, non – government organizations, communities, governments and celebrities to advocate environmental causes. World Environment Day 2021 also marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

The ‘Sustainable Development Goal 13’ of the United Nations urges people to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Given the numerous benefits of trees, such as the fact that they release oxygen into the air, absorb unpleasant odours as well as harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide from the air and purify it, protect us from harmful ultra-violet rays, provide us with food, and play a critical role in preventing soil erosion, maintaining ecological balance, most especially in lessening the effects of global warming, tree plantation isn’t just something that should be done; it’s a requirement, a pressing requirement of the hour.
