The School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering organised ‘A Hands-on Course on Digital Signal Processing using the OMAP-L138 Board’, which was a two-day workshop in association of Texas Instruments, Bengaluru and Cranes Software, Bangalore at Chitkara University, June 20-21, 2013.

The two-day workshop used OMAP-L138 LCDK to reinforce the teaching of DSP theory by means of hands-on laboratory experiments. Participants were guided through a number of example exercises taken from the book “Digital Signal Processing and Applications using the OMAP-L138 eXperimenter”.
Professor Dr Donald Reay from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland (UK), was the resource person for the course. He has taught hands-on DSP, on a number of occasions, as a visiting lecturer at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.

He has co-authored with Rulph Chassaing, the Second Edition of Digital Signal Processing and Applications with the TMS320C6713 and TMS320C6416 DSK published by Wiley. He has also authored “Digital Signal Processing and Applications with the OMAP L-138 eXperimenter” published by Wiley.

Dr C.P. Ravikumar, Director, University Relations, Texas Instruments, emphasized during the inaugural speech that OMAP-L138 has a wealth of on-chip peripheral interfaces, which can greatly expand the system’s communications with external devices, without additional circuit area.

OMAP-L138 is a high-performance, floating point compatibility, low power dual-core processor, which was launched by Texas Instruments in 2009. It integrates an ARM9 core and a C6748 DSP core.

At the system lever, you can use the ARM core to achieve the process management, memory allocation, muti-task scheduling, improving the human-machine interface and peripheral access and other operations; and use the DSP core to focus the data processing and software to run various algorithms.

The course was attended by Engineers from Industry, Academicians and Research Scholars. The delegates from M/s Sarawati Dynamics Pvt Ltd-Haridware, M/s Advance Technology-Chandigarh, PEC University of Technology- Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad, NC College of Engineering-Panipat, LR Institute of Engineering & Technology-Solan, RIMT- Mandi Govindgarh, Chandigrah University-Mohali, Chitkara University-Himachal Pradesh attended the workshop at Chitkara University, Punjab.

Wg Cdr (Retd) R.S. Gill, Vice-President University Affairs, Dr Rajinish Sharma, Dean Academics, Chitkara University Affairs and Prof Rajesh Hooda, Deputy Dean, School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, thanked Dr Donald Reavy , Dr C.P. Ravikumar and delegates for their benign presence at Chitkara University, Punjab.
