Chitkara University Researchers Awarded Patent for Innovative Child Safety Lock System

Published on July 18, 2024 | 141 views

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Kaushal, Professor in the Department of Computer Applications, and Dr. Naveen Kumar, Associate Professor at Chitkara University Research and Innovation (CURIN), have been awarded a patent for their novel child safety lock system. This innovative design promises to enhance the safety and security of young children, demonstrating the university’s unwavering commitment to cutting-edge research and development.

The newly patented child safety lock system is distinguished by its unique design, featuring a square-shaped rod and a foldable handle. This design ensures that the door can only be unlocked by folding the handle and moving the rod laterally. The square rod prevents any rotational movement, adding an extra layer of security. The folding mechanism requires a certain amount of force, which is intentionally set to be challenging for young children to exert. Once unlocked, the handle must be unfolded, making it nearly impossible for a child to re-lock the latch due to the required combination of folding force and lateral movement.

Dr. Kaushal and Dr. Kumar’s invention addresses a critical need for child safety in households, schools, and childcare facilities. Traditional locks often fail to provide adequate security against the ingenuity and curiosity of young children. This new system not only prevents accidental lockouts but also deters children from operating the lock altogether, significantly reducing the risk of injury or mishaps.

The patent award for this child safety lock system is a significant milestone for Chitkara University. It highlights the institution’s dedication to fostering an environment where innovation and academic excellence thrive. The university’s research teams are continually encouraged to pursue projects that have real-world applications and can contribute positively to society. This achievement by Dr. Kaushal and Dr. Kumar is a shining example of what can be accomplished when academic expertise is directed towards solving practical problems.

Chitkara University is proud to celebrate this success, which not only enhances its reputation as a center for innovation but also underscores its role in advancing safety technologies. The university remains committed to supporting groundbreaking research and development efforts that can make a tangible difference in our everyday lives.
