Chitkara University Promotes Hand Hygiene Awareness on Global Handwashing Day
Chitkara University’s Department of Nursing, CSHS, marked Global Handwashing Day with an engaging and educational role play aimed at raising awareness about the importance of hand hygiene. The event, themed “Why Clean Hands Still Matter,” highlighted the critical role of handwashing in preventing infections and maintaining overall health.
Organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from the B.Sc. Nursing 1st semester under the guidance of nursing tutors Preetika and Lakshita, the event served as a powerful platform for nursing students to showcase their creativity and knowledge. Through engaging role play, the participants illustrated proper handwashing techniques and emphasised the significance of maintaining hand hygiene to combat the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, respiratory infections, and COVID-19.
The role play was structured to deliver key messages effectively. It demonstrated the five essential steps of handwashing—wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry—while highlighting the importance of washing hands at critical moments such as before meals, after using the restroom, and after coughing or sneezing. The audience, comprising students and faculty members, responded with keen interest and active participation, making the session highly interactive and impactful.
The event also aimed to instil lasting behavioural change. By combining practical demonstrations with engaging storytelling, the role play encouraged participants to adopt proper handwashing techniques in their daily lives. The realistic scenarios presented helped attendees understand how hand hygiene can prevent infections and contribute to overall well-being.
Speaking about the initiative, the faculty emphasised the university’s commitment to promoting health and wellness through education and practical learning. They noted that increasing awareness about hand hygiene is essential in fostering a healthier campus and society. The positive response from participants underscored the effectiveness of experiential learning in reinforcing health practices.
Chitkara University remains dedicated to encouraging responsible health habits and empowering students to drive positive change within the community. Events like these reflect the university’s broader mission to combine academic excellence with social responsibility, ensuring that students not only gain knowledge but also contribute meaningfully to society.
