Chitkara University Marks Gandhi Jayanti with ‘Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta’ Cleanliness Drive
Chitkara University, Punjab, celebrated the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 1st and 2nd, embodying his timeless message of change and responsibility. In alignment with the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ mission, the university launched the ‘Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta’ campaign, encouraging students and faculty to actively participate in inclusive education on cleanliness and environmental care.
The initiative began in the surrounding adopted villages, where the National Service Scheme (NSS) Volunteers of Chitkara University collaborated with the students of Government Senior Secondary School, Thuha, to conduct a comprehensive cleanliness drive. This united effort underscored the shared responsibility to foster cleanliness and instilled a sense of civic duty among the younger generation. An oath ceremony followed, where students collectively pledged to maintain cleanliness, reinforcing their commitment to preserving the environment.
One of the most impactful moments of the event was the thought-provoking Nukkad Natak, “Vyatha Dustbin Ki,” performed by the NSS Volunteers. Through powerful storytelling and compelling performances, the students illustrated the importance of cleanliness and environmental responsibility. The play, which highlighted the plight of a neglected dustbin, resonated deeply with the audience and emphasised the pressing need to keep surroundings clean. The event sparked discussions on how small actions can lead to significant positive changes in society, reinforcing the importance of quality education in fostering awareness.
Meanwhile, the campus of Chitkara University came alive with the enthusiasm of hostel students, who participated in a spirited cleanliness drive within their living spaces. Armed with determination, boys and girls worked together to clean their hostels, ensuring that their surroundings reflected the values of cleanliness and orderliness. The drive wasn’t just an act of physical cleanliness but a symbolic tribute to Gandhi Ji’s philosophy of self-discipline and environmental stewardship, further promoting the concept of holistic development.
The two-day event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and collective responsibility. Chitkara University’s tribute to Mahatma Gandhi was not only a celebration of his birth anniversary but also a powerful reminder of the transformative power of individual actions. By embodying Gandhi’s message, the university reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of cleanliness, civic responsibility, and environmental consciousness, setting a strong example for future generations and aligning with the goals of Sustainable Development Goal.
