Chitkara University Commemorates 78th Independence Day with Reflective and Artistic Celebrations
Chitkara University, Punjab, marked India’s 78th Independence Day with a series of thought-provoking and culturally rich events, celebrating the nation’s journey towards freedom and progress. The festivities were graced by Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Vice Chancellor, Chitkara University; Dr. Sandhir Sharma, Pro-Chancellor, Chitkara University; and Dr. SC Sharma, Registrar, Chitkara University, along with other senior officials, deans, directors, and faculty members.
The day commenced with a ceremonial March Past led by battalions from the Army, Navy, and Air Forces, symbolising the disciplined strength and unity of the nation. As the national flag was hoisted, its vibrant colours fluttered in the breeze, representing the enduring spirit of freedom. The release of pigeons followed, a symbolic gesture of peace and hope for the future.
Following the ceremony, the celebration continued at the Exploretorium with a roadshow titled “Freedom and Expressions.” This artistic presentation highlighted the role of music, painting, literature, and performance in India’s struggle for independence, showcasing how artists throughout history used their craft as a powerful medium to express and channel the fight for freedom.
Inside the Exploretorium, the event transitioned into a compelling showcase titled “Aazaad Hu Main: Discovering Freedom Through Oneself.” This unique performance explored the contrast between the mechanical rigidity of a robot and the fluid emotion of a joker, each symbolising different aspects of freedom. The narrative journey began with a comedic twist—Error 404: Indian History Not Found—and quickly escalated to the historic moment of Mangal Pandey’s revolt, igniting the flame of revolution that eventually led to India’s independence.
The program unfolded as a cultural tapestry, weaving together dance performances from classical to western styles, each representing key moments in India’s history. A powerful debate depicted the transformation of India from a nation taking its first steps of independence to one ready to run, symbolised by the landmark event of performing the nuclear test.
One of the most poignant moments of the celebration was the representation of SEWA, a significant movement that played a crucial role in transforming the rights of Indian working women. This segment highlighted the ongoing struggle for equality and empowerment in the country.
The event concluded on a high note with the performance of a self-composed and produced song, “Kalam Utha Aagaz Kar,” urging individuals to pick up the pen and start their own revolution through thought, action, and patriotism. As the day drew to a close, the university community stood united, reflecting on India’s past, confident in its present achievements, and hopeful for its future.
