Chitkara University, Punjab, marked World Theatre Day on March 27, 2024, with a mesmerising performance by the Nat Samrat Theatre Club of The Office of Student Affairs. The event, held at the university’s Exploretorium, featured a stunning enactment of the ancient Sanskrit classic “Bhagavadajjukam” under the direction of Robin Das, an eminent theatre director, actor, and Professor Emeritus from the National School of Drama, New Delhi.

The evening began with an air of anticipation as the audience settled in. As the lights dimmed and the curtains drew back, the performers transported the audience to a bygone era. Guided by Mr. Das, the actors brought the classic tale to life, embodying characters with precision and depth. The narrative, rich with humour and moral lessons, unfolded with Ajnataka’s comical stinginess, the mischievous antics of a courtesan and a monk, and a pot of gold that sparked laughter and thought.

Each performer showcased their talent and dedication, weaving a tapestry of emotions that captivated the audience. The actors’ portrayal of the clash between greed and enlightenment was particularly notable, delivering rib-tickling dialogues and slapstick humour that left a lasting impression. The students’ ability to engage the audience and bring out the essence of the classic story highlighted their exceptional skills and the effectiveness of Das’s mentorship.

The performance was met with thunderous applause, culminating in a standing ovation and calls for an encore. The audience’s appreciation echoed through the Exploretorium, a testament to the performers’ hard work and the profound impact of theatre. The event not only celebrated the rich heritage of theatre but also emphasised Chitkara University’s commitment to fostering cultural and artistic expression among its students.

As the evening concluded, the success of the performance was clear. It was a reminder of the power of theatre to unite, entertain, and enlighten. The Nat Samrat Theatre Club’s rendition of “Bhagavadajjukam” stood as a highlight of the university’s cultural calendar, embodying the spirit of World Theatre Day and the enduring magic of the stage. This event underscored Chitkara University’s dedication to nurturing talent and promoting the arts, ensuring that the legacy of theatre continues to thrive within its vibrant campus community.
