Chitkara University Celebrated Teej with Cultural Festivities and Vibrant Traditions
Chitkara University honoured the festival of Teej with a series of traditional celebrations, organised by the Office of Student Affairs. Reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Punjab, the event brought together students and staff in a day filled with music, dance, and artistic competitions that paid homage to the age-old customs associated with this significant festival.
Teej, a celebration rooted in Punjabi tradition, came alive at the university as participants embraced their cultural roots through performances and creative displays. The atmosphere was filled with the vibrant spirit of Punjab, with the sound of rhythmic folk music and the sight of traditional attire creating an authentic experience for all present. Central to the celebration was the performance of Gidha, the traditional Punjabi folk dance symbolising community, unity, and joy. The dancers, dressed in colourful attire, moved to the beats of the dhol, echoing the festive spirit that has been passed down through generations.
The event extended beyond performances, offering a platform for artistic expression. Students showcased their talents in mehendi design and parandi tying competitions, two traditional crafts closely linked to Punjabi culture. Mehendi, with its intricate patterns, symbolised joy and festivity, while the parandi, a colourful hair accessory, reflected the fusion of fashion and cultural heritage. These competitions highlighted the artistic skills of the students, connecting modern expressions with deep-rooted traditions.
The hall, beautifully decorated with Phulkari embroidery, served as a backdrop to the day’s events. Phulkari, known for its vivid and elaborate needlework, is a key symbol of Punjabi craftsmanship. Its presence added depth and authenticity to the celebration, further emphasising the university’s commitment to preserving cultural traditions.
As the festivities drew to a close, winners of the competitions were honoured for their contributions, marking the end of a day that celebrated not just individual achievements but also the shared cultural identity of the university community. The event was a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of Punjabi culture and its relevance in today’s world, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among the students.
