World Radiography Day is observed on November 8 each year to commemorate the discovery of X-radiation, or X-rays, on November 8, 1895, by German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, who was given the Nobel Prize in Physics for this achievement in 1901. The goal of marking such a day is to enhance public knowledge of radiographic imaging and therapy, which plays an important role in patient diagnosis and treatment. The occasion also sees radiographers from across the globe promote radiography as a vocation and important addition to contemporary healthcare.
The first World Radiography Day was celebrated in 2012, with the European Society of Radiology (ESR), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and American College of Radiology (ACR) coming together for the initiative.
The European Day of Radiology, held on February 10, 2011, to commemorate the death anniversary of Wilhem Rontgen, who passed away on that date in 1923, was a forerunner to this event.
