Bsc Nursing students visited Prayaas- Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped Children, Chandigarh
The students of B.Sc. Nursing 3rd yr of Chitkara College of Nursing visited Prayaas- Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped children, Sector 38, Chandigarh. Prayaas works in partnership with the Indian Council of Child Welfare and PGIMER, Chandigarh
The main aim of the visit was to sensitise the B.Sc. Nursing students towards children with disabilities like Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Mental retardation, Speech and Hearing problems, etc. Students learned about the challenges faced by these children and their families. Major treatment modalities included physiotherapy sessions conducted to improve muscle coordination in cerebral palsy patients. Students also visited the preparatory school in prayaas and interacted with students who were severe intellectually impaired. Their trainer gave them basic training in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and teach them reading and writing skills then refer them to special schools afterwards. At last, the Clinical Psychologist talked about how they deal with behavioural problems like banging head, temper tantrums, Pica, therapies used, Intelligence scales and parental counselling. Not just that, they also told us about the importance of nurses in conducting good prenatal & intranatal care due to which many physical and mental disabilities in children can be prevented.
