CCN Students learn water treatment process with a visit to Water Treatment Plant, Chandigarh

Contaminated water poses a serious health risk to whole community. Various water treatment plants are established in order to make water fit for consumption. To get practical exposure of how water is treated and supplied to various parts of community, students of BSc Nursing, second year, Chitkara College of Nursing, were taken to Water Treatment Plant, Sector 39, Chandigarh. Students visited different sections of the water treatment plant where they witnessed different steps of water purification like: cascade aeration, coagulation addition, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, storage and pumping system.
Water treatment is an important industry requirement and comes under four main branches, which include boiler water treatment, cooling water treatment, water purification and the treatment of wastewater effluent. The students learnt about all these aspects of water treatment during the visit.
It is true that water borne infections are responsible for more than 80% of the diseases in all over the world. Whenever there is contamination of drinking water sources and water logging after rain, there is in an outbreak of infection. In order to understand these concepts, it is vital that nursing students and other healthcare students understand water treatment process. The students were taken around the plant and during the visit, they asked several questions for a better insight into the water treatment process.
