The Directorate General of Shipping, is the highest authority which deals with all shipping related matters-policy, legislation, safety of life and ships at sea, prevention of marine pollution, promotion of maritime education and training etc.

Without approval of DG shipping no marine institute is allowed to operate. To get DG approval the institute has to be in compliance with each and every requirement laid down by the DGS. Chitkara University School of Maritime Studies, associate institution of Chitkara University is the first institution in the Northern States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and J&K to get Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), MoS, Government of India approval for both B.Sc. (Nautical science) & B.Tech (Marine Engineering) courses.
