Faculty of Economics, Chitkara Business School, in association with the Centre of Excellence for Sustainability and Central for Rural Outreach and Sustainable Development (CROSD) has officially launched a live project titled: “Waste to Wealth: Exploring the Potential of the Circular Economy” with the objective of providing the hands-on experience and practical understanding of sustainability practices among students. The whole programe was desined for three days of outreach visit to the Liquid Waste Management, Organic Waste Management and Paper Recycling Plant sites.
On Day First, BA (Hons) Economics with Data Science students visited Chitkara University’s ‘Liquid Waste Management Site’, exploring how grey and black water is recycled through advanced Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). Students actively participated, gaining hands-on experience in understanding how the circular economy turns waste into valuable resources, emphasizing the importance of recycling and sustainable waste management.
The journey of Day Two of the live project started with the enthusiasm on 12th September 2024, students visited Chitkara University’s Organic Waste Management Site and the Yellow Farm, where they gained hands-on insights into sustainable practices. Students observed the mechanism of Organic Waste Composter and learn the how food waste is efficiently converted into nutrient-rich compost, showcasing the power of sustainable food waste management. Students also visited to Vermicomposting Facility where, they explored the process of compost production through vermiculture, they observed that how earthworms play a vital role in creating eco-friendly, organic fertilizer. Students actively participated in discussions and observed the processes firsthand. Students were asked to prepare a detailed reports based on their observations and experiences, contributing to the larger sustainability goals of the project.
On Day Three, students visited Chitkara University’s Paper Recycling Plant, where they learned the intricate process of recycling waste paper and actively participated in live projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Paper Recycling in Action: Students were guided through the step-by-step process of recycling, witnessing how waste paper is transformed into reusable material.
DrGurpreet Singh Saggu, Sustainability Manager, Office of Infrastructure Development, Chitkara University, Punjab, guided thestudents throughout this visit. The students’ involvement in these activities deepened their understanding of circular economy principles and the role recycling plays in sustainable development. Their learning will contribute to their upcoming group reports.
