Chitkara University Hosts Civil Engineering Workshop on Urban Planning and SDGs
Chitkara University’s Department of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA), recently held a specialised three-day workshop centered on urban planning and advanced civil engineering technologies. The event, designed to enhance technical skills and decision-making abilities, was organised with a strong focus on aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in fostering sustainable cities and communities.
The workshop emphasised the critical importance of sustainable urban development, with particular attention to master planning for water supply and sanitation systems. Participants gained hands-on experience using cutting-edge software tools such as Water GEMS, Sewer GEMS, Revit, and BIM systems—essential for designing modern urban infrastructure. Additionally, the workshop offered comprehensive training in advanced Excel for data analysis and visualisation, providing participants with enhanced decision-making skills crucial to the development of efficient and sustainable civil projects.
One of the key objectives of the event was to equip engineers with the latest technical knowledge and practical skills to meet contemporary urban challenges. The workshop explored sustainable design principles, including space optimisation, green building practices, and firefighting systems, contributing to cleaner, safer, and more resilient urban spaces. This initiative underscored the importance of integrating technology with sustainable practices, supporting global goals like Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).
Beyond technical learning, the event fostered increased awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and encouraged future collaborations between academia, industry, and government sectors. It also emphasised the importance of lifelong learning and continuous skill development in today’s rapidly evolving engineering landscape, aligning with SDG 4, which promotes quality education.
The workshop effectively bridged academic learning with practical application, offering participants valuable insights into the latest tools and technologies in civil engineering. As the event concluded, attendees expressed enthusiasm for future collaborative efforts aimed at sustainable urban development, reinforcing Chitkara University’s commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and skill development in line with global priorities.
