The Department of National Service Scheme, Chitkara University, Punjab organized the screening of “Water Be Damned”, a documentary film, on the occasion of World Water Day. The documentary film has been directed by Vanita Khanna and produced by Dr. Romila Verma. The program began with a lamp-lighting ceremony. Sabyasachi Bharti, Deputy Director, CMS, led the panel discussion, which revolved around water-saving techniques. Dr. P.S. Siwach, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Chitkara University, Punjab, concluded the ceremony with a vote of thanks.

World Water Day is commemorated on March 22 to raise awareness about the importance of water and to educate people on how to conserve it. World Water Day is primarily focused on assisting in the fulfilment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6, which is to provide adequate drinking water and sanitation to all by 2030. This year’s World Water Day theme is “Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible” (2022). The importance of groundwater is highlighted in the events and programs planned for this day. Many organizations, groups, and leaders urge people to be aware of this rapidly diminishing resource. Under the title ‘Groundwater – Making the invisible visible’, this year’s campaign will explain groundwater’s vital role in water and sanitation systems, agriculture, industry, ecosystems and climate change adaptation.

The overarching message of the campaign is that exploring, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population. The concept of having a global water day was initially proposed in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In that same year, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating March 22 as World Water Day. The next year, in 1993, the observations began. World Water Day serves as a reminder to all of us that we must all work together to address the worldwide water situation.
