Chitkara University organises a virtual event to celebrate World Press Freedom Day

“Freedom of the Press is so precious that no country can forego.”

The Office of Student Affairs under the patronage of Chitkara University, Punjab organised a PERSONALITY REFLECTION and DEBATE COMPETITION on May 3rd, 2021 to celebrate World Press Freedom Day. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of the students, making it a fruitful and fun event. It was a fierce, savage and a concorded competition. Rajat Kingar, a first year student of MBA secured the first position in the Personality Reflection Competition. The second position was secured by Kirandeep Kaur, a first-year student of BSc AHS(MRIT). And the third position was secured by Sanchit Thakral, a first-year MBA student.

Aditya Dubey, a second-year student of ECSE secured the first position in the Debate Competition. Anshika Singh, a first-year student of CSE secured the second position and Vriddhi Bajaj, a first-year student of CSE secured the thirst position in the debate competition. World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.

This year’s theme for World Press Freedom Day is “Information as a Public Good”. The theme serves as a call to affirm the importance of cherishing information as a public good, and exploring what can be done in the production, distribution and reception of content to strengthen journalism and to advance transparency and empowerment while leaving no one behind. The theme is of urgent relevance to all countries across the globe. It recognizes the changing communications system that is impacting our health, our human rights, democracies and sustainable development.
