Come and Explore your potential at Chitkara University!!
To help our staff and students overcome emotional and mental health concerns, Chitkara University has started a Counseling Service, which is free. The service will attend to staff and students of the university. This confidential counseling service can help you explore reasons for personal and psychological problems you may be experiencing and offer solutions.
Introduction
A student can face several problems during academic life. These problems can be solved by a simple discussion with friends, family and teachers. There are times when simple discussions do not offer solutions and one has to seek professional help. Counseling is the best way to do away with problems at various stages in life. Counseling is talking confidentially to a professionally trained listener who has no other role in your life.
What happens in counseling?
Counseling is a process that helps you to identify your problem so that a constructive solution can be reached. The counselor’s role is to offer support and understanding, and to listen and respond in a non-judgmental way. A counselor is a person who will respect your values, choices and lifestyle.
Counseling can help you explore your feelings and discover what actually troubles or confuses you. The process can also help you take decisions, make choices or initiate changes that are right for you.
It offers an opportunity to discuss concerns in a way, which is different to talking to a friend or family member. Another perspective can be offered, which may make it easier to reflect on the situation and understand it differently.
This is the beginning of change
It may be easier to express difficult feelings and emotions to a counselor, than to someone close to you. The counselor will try to help you find ways to recognize your feelings. Counseling will equip you with some new ways of thinking about your problems and you will learn to mobilize your resources and feel more in control.
Some of the issues for which you can get help are:
- Personal problems
- Relationship or identity problems
- Anxiety, stress and depression
- Family and/or relationship difficulties
- Bereavement
- Work and study related problems
- Worries about drugs and alcohol
- Eating difficulties
- Physical or sexual abuse
- Adjusting to a new culture
- Dealing with dilemmas
- Making difficult decisions or choices
- Bullying or harassment
- Feeling homesick, insomnia, loneliness
- Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
- Sexual problems or sexual abuse in childhood
Counselor keeps brief, handwritten notes on counseling sessions. All records are kept securely with access only available to the counselor.
How confidential is counseling?
The Counseling Service takes confidentiality very seriously. All client information is kept confidential. This means that we do not disclose verbal or written information without your permission or consent. The only exceptions are where there is a legal obligation to disclose information or when it is felt by a member of the Service that the client or other people are at serious risk. In these circumstances we will seek your consent before information is disclosed.
Help for parents
Students come across several problems while at a college or university. Some students settle very quickly while others can take longer, and many students experience some type of difficulty with their course/study, making friends, finding solace or being accepted. They may also feel homesick, worry about the past, the present, and the future. These problems are normal for a student.
We have recognized that joining a university can be exciting for students but for parents, carers and family, it can be a challenging time. Through these lines, we hope that we have put your worries to rest. The Student Counseling Service offers great support to matriculated students of the University. In addition to the support available to students, help can be offered to the parents and carers of students with any questions or concerns they have about students’ well-being.
The staff is more or less capable of helping many of our students but the main concern that bother students is confidentiality. This is where the counselor steps in. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the counseling relationship. Meeting a counselor will not be known to anyone except a student and a counselor.
How you can help
Being available to listen to students can be helpful to students. We are here to lend emotional and mental support to your son/daughter as there will be someone in the University who can be told about problems and find solutions.
